Executive Summary
Health is not stillness. A living system that stopped actively adjusting would not be calm; it would be dead. This document unpacks allostasis, the biological mechanism by which the body maintains stability through continuous, active change rather than static equilibrium, and it is the literal, physiological rebuttal to the idea at the center of Harmony's whole argument: that harmony means quiet. It doesn't. It means a system healthy enough to keep making the small corrections it needs, continuously, rather than being forced to hold still.
1. What This Mechanism Actually Is
Homeostasis vs. allostasis. Homeostasis describes the body's tendency to maintain certain variables (temperature, blood pH) within a narrow, fixed range through corrective feedback. Allostasis, a concept developed by Peter Sterling and Bruce McEwen, extends this: the body doesn't simply defend one fixed setpoint, it actively and continuously adjusts its own operating parameters in anticipation of and response to changing conditions; "stability through change," not stability through rigidity.
Why this system exists at all. An organism facing a genuinely variable environment; different demands across a day, a season, a crisis, a period of rest; survives better with a regulatory system that actively adapts its own targets than one that rigidly defends a single fixed state regardless of context.
2. The Mechanism: Continuous Small Correction
Allostatic systems work by making frequent, usually small, adjustments; hormone levels shifting across a day's demands, cardiovascular parameters adjusting to activity and rest, immune activity calibrating to threat level; each correction modest, each one preventing the need for a larger, more disruptive correction later.
The structural insight this gives Harmony: a system that looks "quiet" because it never visibly adjusts is not healthier than one that visibly makes frequent small corrections; it is failing to do the active regulatory work health requires, and the absence of visible adjustment should be read as a warning sign, not a sign of health.
3. Why Continuous Correction Is Adaptive
Small, frequent corrections cost far less, physiologically and structurally, than large, delayed ones. A system that adjusts continuously in proportion to real, current conditions spends less total energy and sustains less cumulative damage than one that holds a rigid state under mounting strain and eventually has to correct all at once.
This is precisely why "positive peace" (Galtung, Harmony's Level 2) outperforms "negative peace" over time: continuous, visible resolution of small tensions is cheaper and more stable than accumulated, suppressed tension that eventually forces a much larger reckoning.
4. Why Suppressing Correction Is Destructive
Allostatic load. When a system is forced to maintain a state that requires constant correction without ever being allowed the correction itself; chronic stress with no resolution, a demand that never lessens, a tension that's hidden rather than addressed; the cost of the unresolved adjustment accumulates as measurable wear: on a body, this produces the same physiological damage described in `FoF.md`; on a system or institution, it produces the same structural version described in Harmony's Level 4 (The Pressure Cooker Principle).
This is the direct mechanistic case against "perceived harmony." Suppressing the visible signs of tension does not stop the underlying system from needing to correct; it only prevents the correction from happening while it's still small and cheap, guaranteeing that whatever correction eventually happens will be larger, later, and more disruptive.
